Known as one of the finest nestled in the Shekhawati region, Mandawa is
not only famous for its royal castle, but also for its innumerable Havelis
where painted facades offer a great variety of surprises.
Mandwa was founded by Thakur Nawal Singh, a descendant of Rao Shekha
after whom the whole Shekhawati region was named. Today this small town
has come out as a major centre of handicrafts and furniture industry.
Mandawa is a beautiful small town in the Jhunjhanu district and is the
capital of Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. Mandawa is most famous for
its forts and havelis and most probably for its royal edifice. Thousands
of tourists visit Mandawa to have a glimpse of the bygone era because
it is an ideal base to discover the legacy of the 18th century frescoes.
A Jat founded the town of Mandawa in the18th century. Initially this
place was known as Mandu ki dhani, Mandu ka bas
or Manduwas which changed to Manduwa, Mandwa
and finally Mandawa. This town was forefiated by the dominant
merchant families of the region. Many havelis and baolis, which are adorned
with colorful paintings were constructed by the wealthy businessmen of
the village. Theses are some of the major attractions for the tourists
visiting Rajasthan. At every turn in the Mandawa, visitors are provided
with the sence of discovery. A camel safari to the neighbourin village
is the most beautiful experience, which will not fail to spellbind the
visitor.
Mandawa is dominated by an imposing mirage like fort which is now a heritage
hotel.
Places must Visit
Castle Mandawa
This castle was built in the year 1755 and is approachable through two
gateways mounted with cannons. Several narrow staircases and courtyards
connect the dinning room with the rest of the rooms, which were added
to the palace over the centuries. A terrace offers a view over the entire
town. Now converted into a charming heritage hotel, do not miss to enjoy
the dinner in the open environment of the castle's back lawns.
Maintained with classic medival theme with the modern luxuries. It provides
the visitors with a sence of discovery at every turn. This medival fort
of Mandawa dominates the town with a painted arched gateway that is adorned
with paintings of Lord Krishna and his cows.
The sprawling architecture of the Castle Mandawa houses a different theme
in different wings. No two rooms in the palace are alike and are adorned
by intricate interior wall paintings and mirror work. One room in the
Zenana or the womens quarter, offers antique murals, another has
a marble fountain and the walls of the room are seven feet thick.The main
huge wall in the center of the castle, which is now an exotic lounge,
is adorend with the Mandawa familys collection of paintings and
antiques.
The open terrace of the castle offers an exotic view of the whole town
that looks mesmerising. At the pavillion there are twinkling oil lamps
which appear as spectacular as the stars in the sky.
Mandawa is pupolar amongst the tourists not just because of the castle
but also it is famous for its Havelis. These havelis are very beautiful
and have been adobes of several primary business families. There are some
of the must visit havelis , which comprise of the Goenka haveli, Chokhana
haveli, Gulab Rai ladla haveli, Mohanlal saraf haveli etc. Most of the
Havelis are privately owened and are not open to the visitors.
Other major attractions of Mandawa are Harlalka mandir, Thakur ji temple,
Tanu Manu saraf haveli, Akhramka haveli and Goenka chhatris and open art
gallery of Mandawa. Mandawa forms one of the major tousrist attraction
of Rajasthan.
