One of the primary temples of Pushkar is the 14th century temple dedicated to lord Brahma; Lord Brahma is Hindu god of creation. The Brahma temple at Pushkar is one of its kinds in the world because very few temples of Lord Brahma exist anywhere in the world.

The great Indian poet, Kalidas, was captivated by the lakeside settlement of the city and such was the charm of the Pushkar city that it even found place in his classic, Abhigyan Shakuntlam. The great Hindu epics like Ramayana and Mahabharta also make references to this religious place regarded to be Adi tirtha.

The lake at Pushkar is considered to be sacred and has a mythological significance associated with it. It is believed that Lord Brahma was in a search for a suitable place to perform a ‘Yagna’ (fire sacrifice, a common practice amongst Hindus). While he was contemplating a Lotus fell from his hand on the wrath and water sprouted from that place and one of that place was Pushkar Lake where Lord Brahma performed the Yagna.
